Former Ethiopian national team head coach Wubetu Abate has agreed to lead Liberian First Division outfit LISCR FC.

Abate left Ethiopian Premier League side Fasil Kenema at the end of the 2024/25 season and was looking for a new role as a head coach.

Abate, 47, was tipped to take the helm at local sides Mechal and Adama Ketema during the summer transfer window. It will be his second tenure as a coach outside of Ethiopia, as he previously worked as an interim coach and assistant coach at Sudanese side Al Ahly Shendi.

LISCR are currently third in the First Division standings with 17 points, as Abate takes the role of head coach on a one-year deal. Abate will become the second Ethiopian to work in Liberia after Selam Zeray, who handles the women’s national side of the West African nation.

Abate, a former player, has handled a host of clubs in his native country during his coaching career. He led Ethiopian Coffee to their only league title during the 2011 season to date, after the restructuring of the top flight in 1997. He also helped Ethiopia qualify for the 2021 African Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Cameroon and the 2022 African Nations Championship in Algeria.
